Our Vision

We serve all STEM educators and network level leaders in building the systems and practices which serve the needs of their entire STEM community: staff, students, and families.

NICE TO MEET YOU

I'm Shana

"Over my 30-year career in education, I've learned the impact of perspective and intent in teaching. My journey began with two goals: to empower students to be better than when they arrived and to ensure they all truly learned. As my schooling didn't imbue me with confidence in science, it took me many years to muster the belief that I should follow my passion and return to school to learn how to teach science effectively. Witnessing the lack of representation in STEM, I founded See Different Consulting to empower teachers in creating inclusive classrooms where all students can excel, irrespective of their backgrounds. This initiative represents a departure from traditional approaches, advocating for equity in education and championing the potential of every student."

What We Do

See Different Consulting LLC supports STEM educators in building classrooms which infuse the teaching of transferable skills within content, so that ALL students can achieve STEM expertise.   We do this by providing targeted PD, instructional tools, and feedback clinics, where teachers develop systems and lessons accessible to all of their students.

Why We Do It

STEM teachers are gatekeepers of opportunities for all students. When there is a misalignment between a teacher’s intent and their impact for student outcomes, there are long-lasting effects. Social Cognitive Career Theory suggests that students’ career choices are influenced by their beliefs that develop through the intertwined interaction among personal, behavioral, and environmental or contextual factors.  In addition, empirical research has documented the positive impact of motivation on students’ long-term engagement in STEM subjects. As STEM educators, we have the power to create that positive impact and motivate students daily. We can create the environment and conditions where all students can thrive in our classrooms.  An alarming statistic comes from the National Institute of Health, which states that while, “Black people make up 13% of the U.S. population, they are only 5% of the physician workforce. Black women comprise only 2.8% of the physician workforce and only 0.8% of full professors at US medical schools.”  Shifting these percentages requires shifting our mindsets around how we create classrooms which build expertise in all students early in their educational careers.  See Different Consulting provides the professional development and tools needed for STEM educators to develop classroom systems, instructional practices and  culture which builds expertise in every student.
